Medieval Manuscript Silk Chiffon Scarf

The pattern on this beautifully made scarf is based on motifs found in a circa-1500 book of hours in the collection of The Fitzwilliam Museum at the University of Cambridge. Based on a strewn-flower border from a page in the book, it includes primroses, violas, thistles, poppies, and chamomile, as well as moths and insects—not to mention the brilliant addition of wild strawberries—all with symbolic meanings that were well known to the medieval populace.

The most common type of surviving medieval illuminated manuscripts, a book of hours is a type of devotional text which was widely popular during the Middle Ages. Each book of hours contains a similar collection of texts, prayers, and psalms but illustrations can vary.

The hems of the scarf are hand rolled, not machine stitched—and, because it is pure silk chiffon, it can easily be tied in a variety of ways. It is large enough to wear as a light shawl.
