Product Details

This gold coin is a replica of a silver coin minted approximately 2475 years ago (500-400 BCE.) on the western coast of the Black Sea.

The coin depicts the head of Gorgoneion with a protruding tongue, which was an early representation of Medusa. The second side depicts an anchor with a single crayfish to its right. The gorgon was a popular apotropaic device, seen as warding off evil. The anchor and the crayfish attest to the city’s reliance on maritime commerce for its economy.
